Do you feel that language learning takes a lot of energy and time? Do you sometimes wonder how to avoid burning out and losing your motivation?
If so, listen to episode 122! In my conversation with Marissa Blaszko, we talk about ways to turn language learning into something that gives you energy and a sense of fulfillment.
About Marissa Blaszko
Marissa is a Polish-American polyglot who is currently relearning her native language as an adult. She creates free resources for other language learners at www.RelearnALanguage.com and on YouTube as Relearn A Language. You can also follow her personal Instagram @MultilingualMarissa for language learning memes, studygram, and fun.
“Languages are . . . what I do to connect with people and to express myself in a new creative way and also to connect with myself in a new way.
I try to do things that are bigger than me. So I try to connect with other language learners through language exchanges which is my all-time favorite social activity.”
Vocabulary from our conversation
polyglot – someone who can speak multiple languages
studygram – a portmanteau, combination, or mash up of “study” + “instagram” in which people on Instagram share their study notes and spaces with other learners
(flashcard) junkie – a person who gets an unusual amount of pleasure from something
Anki – a digital flashcard app which supports images, audio, and videos
to blank out – to unexpectedly forget something
to be tongue tied – to be unable to speak clearly
can’t find the words – to be unable to express oneself satisfactorily
brain freeze – temporary mental confusion
It’s on the tip of my tongue – almost but not quite able to remember a particular word
“I try to think about how, today, can I use my languages to gain more energy and to break the stress-cycle?
Sure, after these activities I’m tired but I have a sense of fulfillment that I didn’t have before.”
Some of Marissa’s examples:
- I can do a conversation exchange in Polish about a topic that I love. . .
- I love cooking new recipes. . . I started doing recipes in Catalan as a creative project. It was a great way to learn all of the names of the foods in Catalan.
- I can make a playlist in Portuguese and look up the lyrics.
